Artibeus aztecus occurs in mountains of Mexico and Central America (south to central Panama), between 600-3,000 m. It is associated with oak and pine-oak cloud forests, but occurs in other forest types, and plantations, Roosts are in caves, abandoned mines, old wells, and trees. This is a medium-sized Artibeus (a forearm length 35-41 mm; weight 18-24 g). A. aztecus feeds on a variety of fruit, and, occasionally, insects.
This species has been moved in the genus Dermanura, but there are no diagnostic morphological differences between Dermanura and Artibeus.
